EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Additional Updates in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
