Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge specific decisions made by the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
